A Google Business Profile is usually suspended for breaking Google's guidelines, such as an ineligible or misleading business name, address or category, a service-area address shown publicly, or a duplicate listing. Check your details against the guidelines, correct what does not match your real business, gather proof, then submit a reinstatement request rather than creating a new listing.
A suspended or unverified profile can make your business harder to find on Google Maps and Search, and you may lose the ability to manage it. The cause is often something small, such as a name edit or an address that does not match your signage. This guide explains the difference between suspension and failed verification, the most common causes and the steps to take before you appeal.
Key takeaways - Suspension and failed verification are different problems with different fixes. - Most suspensions come from details that do not match Google's guidelines or your real business. - Fix the issue first, collect proof, then submit one clear reinstatement request. - Do not create a new profile for the same business. It can make things worse. - Google makes the final decision, and nobody can guarantee reinstatement.
What is the difference between suspension and failed verification?
Verification proves that you control the business at the address you listed. If it fails, your profile stays unverified and you cannot fully manage it.
Suspension means Google has restricted the profile for a policy issue. Depending on the case, you may lose the ability to manage the profile, or the profile may be removed from Maps and Search entirely.
Check the notification email and the message in your profile to see which problem you have.
What are the most common causes of suspension?
| Cause | Example |
|---|---|
| Name does not match real-world name | Added keywords or a location to the business name |
| Address not eligible | Virtual office, mailbox or an address where staff are not present |
| Service-area business showing its address | Home-based or mobile business displaying a home address publicly |
| Duplicate listing | Two profiles for the same business or the same address and category |
| Ineligible or restricted business type | Category or business model Google does not allow |
| Frequent or sensitive edits | Repeatedly changing name, address or category |
| Details do not match the website or signage | Different name, phone or address across sources |
| Review manipulation | Fake or incentivised reviews |
Google's guidelines require that the business has genuine in-person contact with customers, or that it is a service-area business that visits customers. Review the current guidelines before you act.
Why does verification fail?
- The video or document does not clearly show the business, signage and location.
- The address is shared or looks like a virtual office.
- The business name on documents differs from the profile name.
- Required documents do not match the address and name you entered.
- The video is edited, cut or does not show the premises continuously.
- Google asks for a method that you cannot complete, such as a postcard that does not arrive.
Available methods can include phone or text, email, postcard, video recording or a live video call. Google decides which methods you are offered based on your business type, details and region, and you cannot choose a different one.
What should you do before you appeal?
- Read the notification. Note what Google says and the date.
- Compare your profile with the guidelines. List every difference.
- Fix the profile details. Correct the name, address, category, phone number and website so they match your real business and signage.
- Choose the right address setting. If you visit customers instead of receiving them, set a service area and hide your address.
- Check for duplicates. If another listing exists for the same business, resolve it first. Our guide on duplicate Google Business Profile listings explains how.
- Collect proof: - Clear photos of exterior signage and the entrance - Photos of the interior or working area - Business registration or licence showing the business name and address, if available - A utility bill or similar document in the business name, if requested - Your website showing the same name, address and phone number
- Submit one complete appeal through Google's appeals tool, with your evidence attached. Google says an appeal can only be submitted once.
- Respond quickly to any follow-up email from Google and keep the details consistent.
What should you not do?
- Do not create a new profile for the same business at the same address.
- Do not keep editing the name, address and category while the request is pending.
- Do not submit fake documents or misleading photos.
- Do not pay anyone who guarantees reinstatement.
- Do not keep contacting Google about the same request every day.
What if the request is rejected?
Review the reason, if Google gives one, and compare it with the guidelines. Check that your business actually meets the eligibility rules. Some businesses, such as home-based or mobile businesses, are better set up as service-area businesses. Our guide to Google Business Profile for service-area businesses explains how that works. If the issue is unclear, get a second opinion before you take any further steps.
How long does reinstatement take?
Google does not publish a fixed timeline. Reviews can take days or longer, depending on the case and the evidence provided. Submitting accurate, complete information the first time is the best way to avoid delays.

FAQ
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended without warning?
Google often acts after an edit, a report or an automated check finds a mismatch with its guidelines. The notification usually names a general reason. Compare your name, address and category with the guidelines.
Can I open a new profile instead of fixing the suspended one?
It is not recommended. A new profile for the same business can create a duplicate and cause more problems. Fix the issues and request reinstatement.
How many times can I appeal a suspension?
Google says an appeal can only be submitted once, so make it complete: fix the profile first and attach evidence such as business registration, a licence or a utility bill that matches the profile name and address.
Why does my verification video keep failing?
The video may not show the signage, the location or the business tools clearly, or the details may not match the profile. Google requires a live, unedited, continuous recording of at least 30 seconds, made from your phone, that shows your location, your business signage or equipment, and proof that you manage the business. If a video is rejected, Google lists the issues and you can record a new one.
Can a virtual office address be used for a Business Profile?
Generally not, unless the business has staff present at that address during stated hours and meets the eligibility rules. Check Google's current guidelines for your situation.
